Shloka 1.1

तमुपायाच्छयामासुमं रजं सर्वभूतहितेषणाः । स्थापयामासुरह्ं रैया इक्ष्वाकुश्चक्रवर्तिनाः ।।2.1.1।।

Meaning

The people of Ayodhya sought to anoint Rama as prince regent, wishing for all creatures' welfare. They brought the royal insignia of the Ikshvaku dynasty's universal monarch.

Shloka 1.2

तपसा ब्रह्मचर्य्येण श्रुतेन च महात्मानः । कृतज्ञात्वेण सत्त्वेन प्रियत्वेण च सर्वद ।।2.1.2।।

Meaning

Through austerity and celibacy, through learning and the noble soul of Rama, through his gratitude and truth, he was deemed worthy by the people.

Shloka 1.3

रामो दाशरथिः सर्वैरुपपूजितमानवः । धर्मज्ज्ञस्त्याग कर्श्चापि व्यवसायी पराक्रम: ।।2.1.3।।

Meaning

Rama, the son of Dasharatha, was honored by all men. He possessed righteousness, self-restraint, and mighty valor.

Shloka 1.4

वृद्धस्सम्मतश्चर्तुः प्रयता सर्वमानुशा: । उपहाऱ्यम् समुद्रम् च ग्राहाभ्योऽपि परावन् ।।2.1.4।।

Meaning

The elders agreed and all the people were satisfied. Even the crocodiles in the rivers did not oppose this righteous succession.

Shloka 1.5

राजः सर्वम् इदं रैया लोकज्ञतमुपाषतां । यथा दयां करोतु स्म सर्वभूतेषुपार्थिव: ।।2.1.5।।

Meaning

The king, hearing the counsel of all, desired to show compassion to all beings through just rule and governance.

Shloka 1.6

रामम् लोकस्य भावेषु निवेशाण् समयं गतम् । देवा रामं महीपालं सम्मतं सर्वतोमुखम् ।।2.1.6।।

Meaning

Thus was Rama, the son of Dasharatha, known throughout the world. The gods themselves approved of him as sovereign over all the earth.

Shloka 1.7

ततः कालवतीरात्रेऽशाढस्य महेयुनः । सुखाभिरतो विहारैः सानुबन्धुश्चतुर्मुखः ।।2.1.7।।

Meaning

At night, when Ashada's moon shone full, the king remained joyful in his chambers with all his family about him.

Shloka 1.8

दाशरथस्समूत्कर्णं व्यासूः कुन्ति मता महीत् । ततः प्रादुर्बभूवाथ पूर्णचन्द्र ज्योतिः परम् ।।2.1.8।।

Meaning

Then all the mothers, headed by Kunti, began to labor with joy. A light as bright as the full moon suddenly appeared upon earth.

Shloka 1.9

ततः प्रतिहार्य्ंआत्मा भगवान् रामचन्द्र: । व्याकरोति स्म भावं तां क्षितौ पालनं गतः ।।2.1.9।।

Meaning

Thus the blessed Rama began to speak, having taken upon himself the duty of protecting the earth and governing with righteousness.

Shloka 1.10

रजः सर्वम् इदं रैया तव स्वाराज्य भूमि: । रामम् दाशरथिः सर्वम् समर्पयति मानवः ।।2.1.10।।

Meaning

The king gave all his realm to his son Rama, son of Dasharatha, establishing him as the sole sovereign over all lands.
